Switzerland uses population registers. A person is counted as Iran-born based on:

• Country of birth — recorded in the population register

Of the 17,213 Iran-born residents, 5,486 (32%) hold Swiss citizenship, 6,636 hold Iranian citizenship, and 5,091 hold other nationalities.

The register tracks country of birth but not parental birthplace. Swiss-born children of Iran-born parents are not counted.
