Iran-born people live outside Iran as of 2024 — nearly three times the 1990 total.
How the United Nations counts Iranians abroad
- Each country’s total includes only people born in Iran
- Drawn from each country’s census or population register, so definitions and reference years vary
- Second-generation Iranians (children born abroad to Iran-born parents) are not counted
- Some countries (notably the Persian Gulf states) do not publish country-of-birth statistics, so their Iranian populations are not reflected here
Other pages on this site count Iranians more broadly — by ancestry, or by a parent’s birthplace.
